Burnley FC Women return to action in the Northern Premier Division of the FA Women’s National League on Sunday afternoon (October 2), travelling to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers Women in a top of the table clash.
The Claret Women head to the New Bucks Head – home of non-league outfit AFC Telford United – on the back of two consecutive wins.
Jonathan Morgan’s side are still unbeaten this season with only two points dropped, and their latest success came against Hull City Ladies last Sunday with a 3-1 victory in the Determining Round of the FA Women’s National League Cup. Millie Ravening opened the scoring midway through the first half in East Yorkshire, and doubled the lead with 25 minutes remaining from the penalty spot. Hull then halved the deficit, but a late strike from summer signing Aimee Kelly off the bench ensured progression to the First Round Proper.
But now, focus turns back to the league and to Wolves, who have an identical record to Burnley at the start of this season with 13 points – 4 wins & a draw – from their opening five. The two sides are both four points ahead of 3rd- placed Nottingham Forest Women at the time of writing.
The Wanderers, who won the league last term but lost to Southern champions Southampton in the National Play-Off Final, hold top spot on goal difference prior to Sunday’s encounter.
Daniel McNamara’s side also progressed in the FAWNL Cup last time out, winning 5-0 away from home against Northampton Town Women with four different names on the scoresheet as Ali Miller netted a quickfire double early on.
Wolves finished 13 points ahead of the 4th-placed Claret Women last term as they claimed top spot, but it was Burnley who had the better of the pair’s meetings.
Taking a point away in the Midlands last October after an 87th minute leveller from the hosts cancelled out the second of Millie Ravening’s brace, Burnley then claimed a 3-0 win on home soil back in March.
Courtney Willis grabbed a brace that afternoon at the LFA County Ground in Leyland with Sarah Greenhalgh also on target, while captain Lauren Bracewell kept a clean sheet at the other end.
