In a meeting of the top two in the FA Women’s National League North, Burnley FC Women travel to the Midlands on Sunday – 2nd April -, taking on leaders Nottingham Forest (2pm KO).
Currently 2nd, Jay Bradford’s side have two games in hand on the Reds but trail them by four points.
The winners of the Northern Premier Division progress into a play-off final at the end of the campaign against the winners of the Southern Premier Division in the FA Women’s National League. Only the winners of that play-off final gain promotion to the Women’s Championship.
Burnley head into Sunday’s Midlands trip on the back of an unexpected weekend without any match action.
The Claret Women were set to face 3rd-placed Wolves, who have played the same number of games as themselves and are two points behind, before the Wanderers’ County Cup semi-final got re-arranged.
Accordingly, Bradford’s side were last in action a fortnight ago when they beat 4th-placed Derby County 4-1 at the County Ground in Leyland. Leading 3-0 by the 20-minute mark, Millie Ravening added a fourth of the afternoon late on against the Ewe Rams.
That was a sixth consecutive victory for Burnley, who remain unbeaten so far in the league this season. Including Sunday, the Clarets have six games remaining in the division this term.
This weekend’s opponents Forest have themselves only lost two league matches throughout the campaign so far, winning 14 and drawing two.
Last weekend, the Reds beat rivals Derby County 2-0 at Pride Park with goals from Charlotte Steggles & Charlotte Greengrass.
One of Forest’s draws came in the reverse fixture against the Clarets back in October. Burnley had to come from behind to earn a point that afternoon, with Ravening again on the scoresheet, netting a well-placed header.
And in a second meeting of the campaign, it was the Reds who booked their spot in the FA Women’s National League Cup semi-finals courtesy of a 2-1 win on home soil back in January. Striker Alyssa Aherne scored what proved to be a consolation for the Clarets at the Halbrooke Stadium.
Entry at the same venue this Sunday, which can be located with the postcode NG16 3HB, will cost £5 for adults & £3 for concessions.
As the Claret Women enter a big final month of the season, and start a run of four consecutive away games in the league, we hope to see you there!
