Clarets head north in search of league points

Burnley Women’s penultimate game of the calendar year sees them travel to Teesside on Sunday, with Middlesbrough standing between them and another three league points.

The Clarets are yet to be beaten in their 11 league outings to date and lead the way at the halfway point of the season.

Lou Roberts’ side were last in action at Rugby Borough last weekend, and it was Charlie Chadwick’s goal that made the difference in a 1-0 victory.

The striker reacted quickest to a loose ball in the area following a goalkeeping mistake and netted her 12th goal of the campaign – making her the team’s top scorer.

With just an Adobe Women’s FA Cup tie against Peterborough United to come after this weekend, Roberts and co will be keen to end 2025 on a high.

Middlesbrough are enjoying life in the third tier following promotion in the summer and find themselves 4th in the 12-team standings.

The Reds’ form has picked up in recent months and they are unbeaten in all but one of their last six league matches, in addition to a good portion of victories in different cup competitions.

They were held to a goalless draw at Loughborough Lightning last weekend but put three goals past Northampton Town in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup seven days prior.

It was the Clarets who came out on top when these two teams met in Leyland on the opening day of the 2025/26 season.

Claudia Walker opened the scoring with a cool one-on-one finish after just eight minutes, with Mel Lawley and Millie Ravening opening their accounts before half-time too.

Lawley netted another after the break, before substitute Thea Paul added the cherry on top with a sweet strike as the clock hit 90.

Middlesbrough have had a change in management since that day, with Joe Lillie currently in charge following the departure of Michael Mulhern.

Players to look out for include Becky Ferguson and Lauren Robson, who have scored six goals apiece.
