Josh Cullen was left feeling more than proud of his teammates following Saturday's defeat at Newcastle United, with the 10 men Clarets coming agonisingly close to snatching a late point from St James' Park.

Burnley started bright in the North East until a Bruno Guimarães corner found the back of the net, before the visitors were then reduced to 10 after Lucas Pires was shown a red card for a challenge on Anthony Elanga.

Anthony Gordon then slammed home a penalty deep into stoppage time of the first-half, before Zian Flemming scored from the spot himself late on, with the Clarets then coming close to equalising from a cross into the area.

Speaking post-match in Newcastle, despite defeat, Cullen insists there were plenty of positives to take away and had high praise for the bravery and fight shown against the Magpies.

"I think the overall performance was really good today. Even with 11 men before the sending off, we felt we were well in the game and we were having some good spells with the ball.

"The game changes a little bit then with the two goals and the red card and then you come in at half-time thinking 'how do we find ourselves where we are' and being 2-0 down at St James' Park at half-time is not an easy place to be in.

"But I thought we came out with a good spirit and really gave it a good go, we stayed in the game, stuck to our plan and then got the goal late on and on another day we probably turn that last chance in too and get a draw."

The skipper continued: "We haven't been on a great run recently and we are fully aware of that, but we know we have that spirit in the team and a lot of teams could have gone under with 10 men being two goals down at half-time, but that was never going to happen with this dressing room.

"The bravery, the fight and quality the lads showed to come to a place like this, against a squad like Newcastle have got and come so close to getting something, I'm proud of the lads in that dressing room today."

Burnley now turn their focus to next Saturday's clash with Fulham at Turf Moor and Cullen is relishing the feeling of getting back on home turf and says the supporters can play their part on the night too.

"Look there's 23 games to go now, all of them are going to be massive and the next one is next weekend back at home in front of our fans after two weekends on the road,

"The fans are going to be crucial and we need the backing of the fans, get Turf Moor rocking and make it horrible for teams coming to Turf Moor and hopefully we then feed off that and can give a performance to be proud of.

"We know where we are, it's a tough spell, but we will be back on the training pitch next week and getting ready for the next one and we will keep going to turn this corner."
