Burnley FC Women are in league action on Sunday – 5th February (2pm KO) – for the first time in close to three months, on the road for a trip to Loughborough Lightning, the first of back-to-back games against the same opponents.
Jonathan Morgan’s side will play hosts to Lightning next Sunday – 12th February – at the County Ground in Leyland, but first up is a visit to Leicestershire and the Holywell Sports Complex.
The game will be a first in the Northern Premier Division of the FA Women’s National League since 6th November 2022 when Burnley were 7-0 winners away against Liverpool Feds.
Since, while the Claret Women have been involved in various cup competitions, other teams have played out their league games and the standings have altered.
Ahead of Sunday’s game at Loughborough, Burnley now sit 4th in the table and are six points behind leaders Nottingham Forest, though have a game in hand on the Reds.
They also have a game in hand on 2nd-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers, and three in hand on 3rd-placed Derby County.
The first instalment in the Loughborough double-header accordingly presents Morgan’s side with an opportunity to begin a climb back up the ladder, and it also presents one to return to winning ways following two consecutive defeats.
Exiting the League Cup at the Quarter-Final stage to Forest earlier this month, the Claret Women also bowed out of the FA Cup last weekend with a defeat at home against Cardiff City Ladies.
Having already added Meg Boydell to his ranks early on in January, Morgan completed the additions of both midfielder Lara Miller and forward Laura Elford on Friday.
Both new signings will be eligible to make their debuts at the Holywell Sports Complex, against a Lightning side who this week appointed a new manager in the shape of Charlie Baxter.
The former assistant manager at Ipswich Town Women, Baxter inherits a Loughborough side bottom of the table with two points to their name after 12 games.
Lightning most recently lost 2-1 at home to Derby, their goal – their fifth in the league this season – a late consolation coming via a County player putting through their own net.
