Burnley FC Women host West Bromwich Albion Women at the County Ground in Leyland on Sunday afternoon – 23rd October (2pm KO) – in what will be their last scheduled home league game until mid-December.
Jonathan Morgan’s side are scheduled to take part in various cup competitions in the coming weeks, and after West Brom are not set to be back action at home in the Northern Premier Division of the FA Women’s National League until 18th December against Loughborough Lightning Women.
Before focus can switch to the cup competitions however, the Claret Women will take on the Baggies in their dedicated Rainbow Laces fixture with the Club coming together to show its support for the campaign. The players will warm up pre-game in special t-shirts in Leyland representing the Stonewall charity.
When the action gets underway, the Claret Women will be searching for a first win in three after 1-1 draws against both Nottingham Forest Women & Brighouse Town Women in recent weeks.
The latter of those saw a midweek trip over the Pennines where Millie Ravening’s header earned a point having cancelled out Monique Watson’s early opener for the hosts. Morgan’s side now sit 2nd in the league table, a point behind leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers Women. Midfielder Ravening, Burnley’s top scorer so far this campaign, celebrates her 21st birthday on Sunday, and will be hoping to mark it with victory against a West Brom side sat 8th in the division under the guidance of boss Jenny Sugarman.
In their second non-COVID impacted campaign back in the third tier having been promoted in 2018/19, Albion endured a 6-0 thrashing at home to Forest on the opening day though picked up victories in their next two to put points on the board.
Since then though, they’ve not been able to record any further wins and most recently lost 3-1 at Wolves. Having got themselves ahead via Phoebe Warner, Sugarman’s side conceded three without reply, so were defeated in the West Midlands derby.
Accordingly, both Burnley and West Brom are looking to get back to winning ways on Sunday afternoon in Leyland, and are level at 1-1 from last season’s meetings.
The Baggies Women won the first one just shy of 12 months ago at the County Ground with a 4-3 victory on a more than damp day, while in the reverse fixture at the end of April, Burnley got their retribution with a relentless 8-0 success on the road in Sutton Coldfield.
In what was the penultimate game of the 2021/22 campaign, Ravening hit a hat-trick while Evie Priestley, Sarah Greenhalgh, Olivia Wilson & Lizzie Hamer were also all on the scoresheet.
Entry is free, as always this season at the Lancashire FA’s headquarters, for this afternoon’s game, but if you can’t make it will be shown live on TikTok! We will also provide full match updates on Twitter, and don’t forget that as well as those two platforms, you can keep up to date with all things Burnley FC Women via our Facebook & Instagram!
