Tony Philliskirk’s youth team took a point in U18 Professional Development League action for the second consecutive Saturday, sharing the spoils with Crewe Alexandra in a 1-1 draw at the Burnley Training Centre.
As he was in last week’s 3-3 stalemate away at Birmingham City, Young Clarets captain Joe Westley was on target against the Railwaymen. He levelled things up midway through the first half to cancel out Marquise Martins’ opener from the penalty spot from the visitors.
Boss Philliskirk made three changes from the game at Birmingham with goalkeeper Harry Moss returning to the side to replace Charlie Casper, and U16 squad member Jack McEvilly & Jack Rogers both coming in for their first starts of the season in place of Brad Grant & Frankie Deane.
First Half
Burnley found themselves under pressure in the opening few minutes of the game and were in trouble when Martins broke through the backline, brought down inside the area and earning his side a penalty when referee referee Matt Archibald pointed to the spot.
Martins himself stepped up and converted from 12 yards out to hand the Alex an early lead, and he also came close once again on 17 minutes when he saw a header bounce inches wide.

Despite Crewe’s early pressure, the Young Clarets levelled through Westley prior to the half-hour mark, the striker again on target having latched onto a ball over the top to calmly slot past a helpless Jack Flint in the Crewe goal.
Callum West volleyed over from the edge of the area and Westley was slipped through on goal once more before the end of the half, but on this occasion the striker could only drag his effort wide in what was the last action of the first 45 minutes.
Second Half
Philliskirk was forced into a half-time change with Tosin Olopade withdrawn through injury and Lucas Wane coming on to replace him in a move that saw Ryan Tioffo switch into an unfamiliar right-back role.
The visitors again had the quicker start to the half with defender Matthew Senior, up for a corner, heading into the side netting, though Burnley again grew into the game and shortly after the hour-mark saw substitute Wane drive through the heart of the Crewe midfield before taking aim at goal. Only the head of Senior was in the way to deflect his attempt wide.
Chances were few and far between, with another substitute in Crewe’s Ben Furlong the next to go close with just over 15 minutes remaining as he found space on the edge of the area but also had his shot blocked away from danger.

Rohan Vaughan then had a chance to put Burnley in front, also on off the bench, at the other end when the impressive Westley intelligently turned his marker from a throw-in before teeing up strike partner Vaughan who could only drive wide.
A late opportunity for the visitors came after smart work from full-back Joel Vincent to break down the right-hand side, before cutting back to an unmarked Muhamed Jatta who curled an effort just over the bar.
That proved the final action of note in East Lancashire, and with the draw Burnley stretched their unbeaten run in the league to six matches.
Philliskirk’s side are now back in action next Saturday – 29th October - with a trip to Hull City in a game being played at Bishop Burton College (1pm KO).
