Clarets return to league action

Three Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League points are up for grabs when Burnley welcome Stourbridge to the Country Ground, Leyland this weekend.

Both of the Clarets’ matches in 2025 to date have been in cup competitions, and their most recent outing was a 5-0 victory over AFC Fylde last weekend.

That came at the semi-final stage of the Lancashire FA Senior Cup and Claudia Walker got the team off to the perfect start, netting after just 10 minutes.

It was 2-0 just seven minutes later when Grace Palmer netted for the first time this season, and Walker added her second after the hour with a well-taken volley.

Late goals from Heidi Logan and top scorer Laura Elford added extra positivity to a dominant display at Kellamergh Park.

Rebecca Sawiuk’s team’s last league outing came all the way back in November when they downed Hull City at the Easy Buy Arena.

Brenna McPartlan and Walker were on target that day, and the Clarets will be hoping for the same outcome come 4pm on Sunday.

Because of the gap in league fixtures Burnley now sit 3rd in the table with 25 points from 10 matches.

The Clarets have two games in hand on leaders Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers and, should they win both of those matches, will move one point behind Forest and level on points with the latter.

Stourbridge are competing at the other end of the table and are currently 11th in the 12-team standings with six points from 11 matches.

Manager Aid Clements joined the ‘Glassgirls’ in the summer and their two league victories to date have come against Halifax in September and Sporting Khalsa in October.

They come into this one on the back of a 7-2 defeat to Wolves last weekend, with hat-tricks from Amber Hughes and Charlotte Greengrass stealing the show.

Gwen Horgan’s long-range strike was accompanied by one from substitute Olivia Ashfield for the Glassgirls, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a convincing defeat.

Burnley came out on top when these two teams faced off back in August, but Stourbridge took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break thanks to Rosie Embley’s penalty.

Sawiuk’s side took control after the restart, though, with Brenna McPartlan restoring parity and Emma Siddall turning the game on its head in a four-minute spell.

Laura Elford added the gloss in second-half stoppage time to ensure it would be two wins from two at the start of the campaign.

Burnley season ticket holders can claim free entry by presenting their season card at the gate on Sunday afternoon.

Other adults are priced at £5, while concessions are £2. Free parking is available on a first-come-first-served basis.
