Clarets aim to return to winning ways

Burnley Women will fight for three Northern Premier Division of the FA Women’s National League points when Rugby Borough visit Lancashire on Sunday afternoon.

The Clarets are aiming to bounce back from defeat the last time they took to the field and claim a 13th league victory of the season.

By the time the game comes around it will have been two weeks since Rebecca Sawiuk’s side’s last outing, a 3-2 defeat to Stoke City.

Amelia Hazard gave us the lead on the day but a quick-fire treble from the visitors after the break gave the Potters control.

After Naomi Hartley was sent off, Brenna McPartlan reduced the deficit to one but it wasn’t enough to claim a result.

Before that match the Clarets had won five straight games, scoring 30 goals and conceding zero in the process.

Burnley are currently 3rd in the 12-team table with 37 points from 15 matches.

That’s five points less than leaders Nottingham Forest and 2nd-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers, although they have played one and two matches more respectively.

Rugby Borough are slightly lower in the standings, with their 28 points from 15 matches enough to see them sit 5th.

Managed by Lee Burch, Rugby have adapted to life in the North section well having moved from the southern half of the division for this season.

After beating Stourbridge 4-1 in the Challenge Cup, Burch’s team played Derby County last weekend and managed a 1-1 draw.

Chene Muir gave the Ewes the lead, but Rugby hit back before half-time through Lucy Wood to claim a point.

This will be the first meeting between the teams this season and players to look out for include captain Ebony Wiseman, alongside joint top scorers Angelina Nixon and Yasmin Mosby who have 14 goals each.

Kick-off at the Lancashire FA headquarters (PR25 2LF) is 2pm and Burnley season ticket holders can claim free entry by presenting their season card at the gate.

Other adults are £5, while concessions are £2.
