Josh Brownhill said he was disappointed that the team couldn't give the travelling fans 'anything to celebrate' as the Clarets bowed out of the Emirates FA Cup in the fifth round at Deepdale.

Speaking post-match, the captain declared the players took full responsibility for the performance and were keen to put things right against Cardiff City on Tuesday.

“It just wasn’t good enough. It’s embarrassing looking back, especially for the fans who came here, packed it out again. We didn’t give them anything to celebrate.

“We take responsibility as players in there, we said it ourselves. It’s one of those, we can’t dwell on it too much, it wasn’t the best performance at all, but we know that there’s a big game on Tuesday.”

Two first half goals from the home side gave the visitors a big mountain to climb second half and the midfielder reflected that he felt there wasn't enough fight from the team to get back into the game.

“It’s a silly foul and it went in the top corner. Again, the second goal, there’s never a good time to concede. We come out second half, there’s not enough fight in there. It was just one of those days, we’ve not been like that all season, probably one game.

“There’s an important game on Tuesday and we’ve just got to put it behind us.”

With a place in the Quarter Final of the competition to play for, what was Head Coach Scott Parker's message at half-time?

“He just said that everybody’s got to get up for it, got to be up for the fight. We came out, put them under pressure for five or ten minutes, maybe score a goal, things can change quickly.

“Again, we came out we didn’t do that, we didn’t really have many clear-cut chances. Overall, we deserved the defeat.”

How important does the 29-year-old feel it is that the team show character and rally following the disappointing defeat?

“Yes, it’s going to be huge. I’ve done it many times in my career. A few years ago, I was saying inside, it happened when we played Sheffield United away it was a bit of a shock for everybody, but we came out fighting after that. We went on a massive run and hopefully it’s one of those days, it’s sort of a reality check, we can’t perform like that ever again."

An exit from the cup means Scott Parker's men can turn their full attention to the league and Brownhill says Tuesday's game can't come quick enough.

"We can’t get too down about it. We take accountability for that, and we all know we weren’t at the races today. There’s a game on Tuesday which I think everybody will be buzzing with because there’s a chance to put it right and continue our good form in the league.

“It can’t come quick enough to be honest. I wish it was tomorrow to put things right. We’ll go again tomorrow in training and hopefully on Tuesday we can make it right.”
