FAWNL Cup returns this weekend

Burnley Women start their three-game week with the visit of Norton & Stockton Ancients in the FA Women’s National League Cup on Sunday afternoon.

This is a last 32 tie after the Clarets won Group T with nine points from nine, while Norton progressed from Group U as runners up.

Burnley’s last outing was a goalless draw at Halifax last weekend. Lou Roberts’ side had a goal disallowed and hit the woodwork but weren’t quite able to find that decisive winner.

That doesn’t dent the fantastic start the team have made to the season, though, with eight wins and two draws from 10 matches in all competitions.

The Clarets have a fantastic record in the FAWNL Cup this season, winning all three games with an aggregate score of 21-0.

Norton & Stockton Ancients operate in the league below Burnley and are currently 9th in the 12-team table.

They were beaten 4-0 at top-of-the-league Cheadle Town Stingers last weekend, with the Manchester-based side scoring twice on both sides of the half-time break.

Norton progressed to this stage of the FA Women’s National League Cup as one of the 10 best runners up, finishing behind Liverpool Feds in Group R.

An impressive 2-0 victory over third-tier Halifax saw them over the line, with Bianca Owens and Chloe West on target at Myra Shay Playing Fields that day.

Prior to that they had beaten York City 1-0 and shared the spoils with Leeds United following an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Burnley season ticket holders can claim free entry by presenting their season card at the gate on Sunday.

Other adults are priced at £5, while concessions are £2.50. Free parking is available at the Daisy Arena in Nelson (BB9 7BN) on a first-come-first-served basis.
