Clarets enter Lancashire FA Women’s Senior Cup

Burnley Women kick start the defence of their Lancashire FA Senior Cup title when they travel to AFC Fylde on Sunday afternoon.

The Clarets are entering the competition at the semi-final stage after Wythenshawe’s withdrawal, with a place in the final against Chorley or Darwen up for grabs.

By kick-off on Sunday it will have been more than 10 days since Rebecca Sawiuk’s team’s last match, which was a narrow defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

The third round tie went to extra time on a bitterly cold night in the Midlands and Charlie Wellings’ 99th minute strike ultimately proved to be the difference between the sides.

Burnley’s last three matches have come in cup competitions and Sawiuk made five changes to the XI that started against Stoke City prior to Christmas.

Kirstie Levell returned in goal while a new look midfield pairing saw Rhema Lord-Mears and Amelia Hazard come together, with the former wearing the captain’s armband.

Further forward Aimee Kelly started to the left of striker Claudia Walker.

AFC Fylde have not been able to play a game this side of the new year, with the weather causing two matches to be postponed.

The Coasters operate in the FAWNL Division One North, the tier below the Clarets, following relegation at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Unfortunately for them they’ve found it tough this campaign and sit bottom of the 12-team table with 10 points from their 13 matches, courtesy of three wins and a draw.

They did, however, record an impressive 2-0 victory away at 3rd-placed Leeds United in their last outing despite being down to 10 for a significant period.

Both goals came in the first half, with Katie Bowers Folan netting in the 10th minute before Natasha Dale doubled their lead with 28 on the clock.

These two teams have already met this season, with Burnley winning 7-0 in the FA Women’s National League Cup determining round back in August.

Laura Elford scored a hat-trick and further goals came from Bella Reidford, Aimee Kelly, Charley Docherty and Rhema Lord-Mears in a dominant display at Nelson FC’s Daisy Communications Arena.

Tickets can be purchased from Kellamergh Park (PR4 1TN) on the day and are priced at £5 for adults and £2 for children, with those under 12 going free. Kick-off is 2pm.
