Burnley Women started their pre-season schedule with a well-fought draw against Valencia Femenino on Wednesday evening.

It finished goalless at Estadio Antonio Puchades with the Clarets having the better of the attacking opportunities, but unable to break the deadlock.

The starting XI included five summer signings, with Christie Harrison-Murray wearing the captain’s armband.

Northern Ireland international Jackie Burns was named in goal, while Maddi Wilde, Tyler Toland, and Charlie Wellings took up roles in defence, midfield, and attack respectively.

Burnley started on the front foot and had it have been a competitive fixture, Nazareth Martin’s yellow card for a last-ditch tackle in the third minute might well have been red.

After an end-to-end start in 30-degree heat the referee signalled for a water break, which seemed to inject added life into the Clarets.

Harrison-Murray had a long-range effort palmed away, before Charlie Chadwick and Jade Richards had strikes turned behind in quick succession.

Manager Jackie Bachteler made seven changes at half-time, as Eva Spencer took her turn in goal and Charley Docherty and Jessica Hennessy joined the defence.

Jamie Finn and Brenna McPartlan formed a new partnership in midfield, with Kiera Sena and Claudia Mummery-Walker lining up on the left and in the middle of the attack respectively.

Hennessy thought she’d broken the deadlock with 56 minutes on the clock when she connected with Sena’s perfectly-whipped cross, but the lineswoman’s flag curtailed any celebrations.

By this point Burnley were firmly in control and after Thea Paul shot narrowly wide from range, one of the better chances came less than 10 minutes from time.

McPartlan’s dinked through ball found Mummery-Walker on the stretch, but the striker’s effort drifted centimetres over the bar.

The players hassled and hurried right through to the final whistle, rounding off a worthwhile evening with vital minutes and fitness.

The group will return to Burnley on Friday to continue their preparations for the 2026/27 Barclays Women’s Super Lague 2 season, which starts on the weekend of Friday 4th September.
