Burnley FC Women began their season with a victory, beating Liverpool Feds 3-2 at Jericho Lane Sports Hub in the FA Women’s National League North.
Lizzie Hamer opened the scoring before Feds levelled ten minutes after the break through Beth Donoghue.
The Clarets instantly retook the lead as Leah Embley netted and Millie Ravening’s top corner strike made it 3-1.
Feds netted a late consolation through captain Chantelle Thompson, but Burnley saw the game out to claim three points on the opening day.
Rebecca Sawiuk brought five of her new signing’s in from the start as Kirstie Levell, Alethea Paul, Brenna McPartlan, Mikayla Wildgoose and Rhema Lord-Mears were all named in the 11.
Fellow new face Maria Francis-Jones made the bench.

First Half
Burnley started the game well and created three half chances early on with Ravening dragging shot wide, Aimee Kelly testing Rachel Darbyshire and Lord-Mears also driving an effort wide.
The hosts had the biggest opportunity early on however, with Paige Cole drilling a low strike towards goal that looped up off a boot in the area, and onto the top of the bar.
The Clarets took the lead on 24 minutes, as Hamer capitalised on an error by Darbyshire and sent a chipped effort towards goal that evaded the reach of the Feds stopper and dropped into the back of the net.
Big chances for both sides followed, as Ellie Fletcher broke in behind the Burnley defence and hammered a shot at goal that Levell was equal to as she tipped over and Ravening went close at the other end after Lord-Mears cut the ball back for her and she saw her effort deflected wide.

Second Half
Sawiuk’s side had a big chance to make it two after 55 minutes as Kelly worked the ball through to Embley, who’s low strike was well saved by the feet of Darbyshire.
And the Claret Women would be punished for that missed opportunity, as Feds countered, and Donoghue found herself in space to slot past Levell.
The scores weren’t level for long however, as Hamer played through Embley, who hammered a strike back across goal into the far bottom corner, leaving Darbyshire with no chance.
Half-chances followed before Ravening netted the Clarets third with an expertly placed, arrowed effort into the top corner following a cut back.

Feds would net again through Thompson, as she placed into an empty net, but Burnley did enough to see the game out and secure the three points.
The Claret Women are back in action next Sunday – 27th August – as they face Newcastle United away from home in the determining round of the FA Women’s National League Cup.
