Burnley Women were unable to turn possession into points as they played out a goalless draw with Halifax on Sunday afternoon.
There was one planned change from last weekend’s 3-0 victory over Hull City, with Abbey-Leigh Stringer replacing Brenna McPartlan in the heart of midfield.
Goalkeeper Kirstie Levell and left wing-back Tilly Wilkes withdrew late through illness, meaning Eva Spencer and Thea Paul were given unexpected starting berths.
The Clarets enjoyed the better of the possession from the off and Jade Richards thought she’d broken the deadlock in the 12th minute, but her stooping header was ruled offside.
Yana Daniëls tested Halifax ‘keeper Maddie Crosbie with a header soon afterwards and Mel Lawley was next to take aim with no luck.
It wasn’t one-way traffic and both teams’ desire produced dangerous situations around the half hour.
Millie Ravening then had a low effort saved in the bottom left corner before Halifax produced their best chance of the first half in stoppage-time, but Megan Shaw blazed over from 18 yards.
The second half continued in similar fashion to the first, with Lou Roberts’ side working the ball and creating chances that were repelled.
Burnley also weren’t quite getting the luck of the draw, with Stringer and Claudia Walker both miscuing volleys from good positions on the hour.
Roberts turned to her bench for the first time in the 68th minute, replacing Lawley and Ravening with Aimee Kelly and Millie Chandarana respectively.
Kelly almost had an immediate impact when she received the ball and turned on the edge of the area, but her shot was straight down Crosbie’s throat.
Richards later hit the bar from another header before being replaced by former Halifax loanee Charlie Chadwick in an attacking change.
There were five added minutes at the end of the 90 and both teams had spells in the opposition half during that period.
Chadwick came closest to finding the winning goal but couldn’t quite get the desired contact on her overhead kick after Kelly’s effort was blocked.
The result means Burnley now have 14 points from their six league matches to date, leaving them 2nd in the table.
Next up is the visit of Norton & Stockton Ancients in the FA Women’s National League Cup on Sunday 19th October.
