Burnley Women started their 2024/25 season in style as seven different players found the back of the net in a 9-0 victory over newly-promoted Hull City on Sunday afternoon.
Four goals in a blistering opening 20 minutes set the tone for what was to come as the Clarets dominated proceedings on a warm day at Nelson FC’s Daisy Communications Arena.
Head Coach Rebecca Sawiuk named five debutants from the off in Charley Docherty, Claudia Walker, Grace Palmer, Anna Grey and Amelia Hazard.
Burnley fired out of the starting blocks and Naomi Hartley’s header opened the scoring on 14 minutes before Walker doubled the lead two minutes later from close range.
Docherty made it three and Burnley were four to the good by the 21st minute courtesy of Palmer’s beautifully curled effort from range.
Emma Siddall forced the fifth and final goal of the half with a lengthy run and cross that saw Cath Hamill turn the ball into her own net.
Centre-back Helen Seed replaced Hartley for her Clarets debut at the break, and it was 6-0 five minutes later as Palmer netted for the second time.
Sawiuk continued to rotate her squad with Reanna Blades, Rhema Lord-Mears, Laura Elford and Aimee Kelly all coming on for valuable minutes.
Blades’ trickery had an immediate impact, winning a penalty that Brenna McPartlan converted before Hazard found the bottom right corner for her first Clarets goal 20 minutes from time.
Despite the scoreline Burnley were relentless in their desire to push forwards and Elford put the cherry on top in the sixth minute of added time, curling beautifully beyond Hull ‘keeper Abi Wallace.
Burnley will be aiming to build on their impressive opening day display when they visit Stourbridge on Sunday 25th August. Kick-off at the War Memorial Ground is 2pm.
