Clarets return to winning ways in style

Burnley Women produced a dominant performance as they beat Halifax 7-0 to complete the league double over the West Yorkshire side on Wednesday night.

There were five different scorers on a wet and windy night in Nelson, with Georgia Marshall and Laura Elford managing a brace each.

Interim Head Coach Louise Roberts made four changes to the side that started Sunday’s defeat at Rugby Borough, with Marshall returning to the heart of the defence.

Louise McDaniel played alongside captain for the night Brenna McPartlan in central midfield, with Rhema Lord-Mears occupying the attacking midfield role.

Northern Ireland international Danielle Maxwell started to her right, with Charley Docherty switching to the left of the three behind Heidi Logan, who led the line.

Logan tested Halifax ‘keeper Sophie Donald in the first minute, turning well before unleashing a powerful shot from 22 yards.

The Clarets dominated the ball throughout the night and looked particularly threatening when getting the ball out wide, with Docherty and Maxwell using their pace to good effect.

After a sustained period of pressure the deadlock was broken on the half hour.

A well-worked team move involving Tilly Wilkes and Lord-Mears saw the ball land at Docherty’s feet, and she fizzed it across the face of goal for Logan to pick out the bottom right corner.

It was 2-0 five minutes later and Docherty was the provider once again, crossing from the byline for McPartlan to finish from beyond the near post.

The Northern Ireland international then came agonisingly close to her 10th goal of the season on the stroke of-half-time when her volley was cleared off the line by Sarah Hassanin.

Burnley continued their dominance after the break and Marshall marked her return with a goal in the 55th minute.

After Wilkes’ corner was flicked into her path by McPartlan, the centre-back stuck out a leg to score from close range.

Roberts turned to her bench for the first time shortly after the hour, with McDaniel, Docherty and Logan making way for Bella Reidford, Aimee Kelly and Elford.

It took just six minutes for the latter two to make an impact as Kelly cut in from the left to smack a dipping effort off the bar, and Elford reacted quickest to adjust and finish first time.

Reidford forced a flying save from Donald soon after and as Burnley started to pick up the tempo, Kelly got herself on the scoresheet 14 minutes from time.

The winger did well to control the ball with her midriff following a set piece and produced a smart finish into the bottom left corner to make it five.

The final two changes saw Amelia Hazard and Louanne Worsey replace McPartlan and Lord-Mears before two goals in five minutes rounded off a fine night in front of goal.

Kelly turned provider for Elford to head in despite the best efforts of Donald before Marshall found the net with her third goal of the campaign following a set piece.

With one Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League match to go Burnley are now 4th in the table with 43 points courtesy of 14 victories.
