Clarets bow out of FA Women’s National League Cup

Burnley Women’s impressive nine-match winning run was ended with a 1-0 defeat to Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.

Millie Ravening’s second-half free-kick was the difference between the two teams at Turf Moor, with the Potters progressing to the semi-finals of the FA Women’s National League Cup.

There were two changes to the XI that started the 11-0 rout over Bradford City last time out.

Naoisha McAloon, who has played in all bar one of the Club’s five cup matches to date this season, was given the opportunity to play at Turf Moor for the first time.

Tilly Wilkes returned at left-back, meaning Emma Siddall reverted to her favoured right-back role and Charley Docherty pushed further up the right flank.

McAloon was called into action after just three minutes, doing well to parry a powerful Tamara Wilcock effort after good skill from the Stoke winger.

The Clarets went up the other end soon after and a Grace Palmer corner caused panic in the Stoke box, but Naomi Hartley’s header was cleared.

In truth it was a half affected by several injury stoppages, with both teams competing well in a feisty affair. As such, Reanna Blades and Laura Elford both picked up yellow cards.

Burnley came closest to opening the scoring when Charley Docherty looked likely to cross from wide right, but her delivery curled in towards the near post and Lauren Bracewell had to divert it behind.

Sawiuk took action at half-time, replacing the cautioned Blades with winger Kelly.

However, it was the visitors who started brightest and were awarded an indirect free-kick within a minute as McAloon picked up what was deemed to be a Tilly Wilkes back pass by the referee.

Former Claret Ravening smashed the set piece goal bound, but a combination of bodies in the crowded penalty area cleared the ball to safety.

Another change on 50 saw Elford make way for Bella Reidford, before a moment of magic gave the visitors the lead.

It was Ravening who was on target, smashing a free-kick into the top right corner from all of 35 yards.

Sawiuk continued to utilise her replacements as Claudia Walker came on for Docherty and the Clarets started to build up a head of steam.

After a Walker effort from the edge was comfortably saved, Georgia Marshall set up Hartley to strike a powerful volley that Bracewell saved smartly to her left.

Burnley kept pushing forwards and when Walker was able to work an angle for herself, the striker curled narrowly wide from outside of the area.

A last roll of the dice saw Rhema Lord-Mears replace Palmer 10 minutes from time but, despite their best efforts, and equaliser wasn’t to come.
