Burnley FC Women fell to defeat for the first time in almost a calendar year – and for the first time under the management of Jonathan Morgan – as they lost 2-1 against Nottingham Forest in the Quarter-Finals of the FA Women’s National League Cup.
Charlotte Steggles gave Forest the lead from the penalty spot after Ellie York was harshly adjudged to have brought down Arryana Daniels, and Gianna Mitchell added a second for the hosts 10 minutes from time.
Alyssa Aherne – who was introduced by Morgan in the 57th minute for her Clarets debut – netted late on, but that goal proved to only be a consolation as the Claret Women fell to a defeat for the first time since March 2022.
Burnley made three changes from the Vitality Women’s FA Cup victory at home to Norwich City a fortnight ago. Captain Lauren Bracewell returned in goal, full-back York came into the backline and Ella Kinzett returned to the midfield.
First Half
The hosts had the first real chance of ,the tie when defender Steggles ventured forward before firing wide of Bracewell’s goal 12 minutes in.

Yasmin Mosby also fired a free-kick over the bar before defender York struck a shot over on the half-volley from a corner for Burnley’s first effort.
And after Mosby went close again with a snapshot on the turn, the contentious penalty was awarded with Forest going ahead.
To the confusion of most in attendance at the Halbrooke Stadium, York was adjudged to have brought down Forest defender Arryana Daniels despite the pair appearing to collide with York the one felled.
However given the opportunity from 12 yards out, Steggles stepped up and placed the penalty past Bracewell into the bottom corner.
That proved to be the last action of note in the opening 45 minutes as Morgan’s side went into the break behind.
Second Half
Forest began the second half the better and would’ve been two up had it not been for a terrific save from Bracewell to scramble and save a swerving Charlotte Greengrass volley that was heading for the back of the net.

As the clock ticked on towards the last 20 minutes the Claret Women continued their fight for an equaliser and almost found one as Leah Embley was threaded through on goal by Millie Ravening but could only drag her shot narrowly wide.
And soon after, they were made to rue that missed opportunity as Forest substitute Mitchell finished off a fluid counter attack with a strike from the edge of the box.
Morgan’s side though continued to search for a route back into the contest, and pulled a goal back through substitute Aherne as a Dom Cooper cross found its way into Amaya Coleman-Evans, who had also come off the bench.

The Spaniard touched the ball through for Aherne to slot into the corner, and set up a grand-stand finish.
A late barrage though wasn’t enough to send the game to extra-time, with another dubious decision deep into time added on as Ellie May broke through but was ruled offside, and Forest advanced to the Semi-Finals.
Burnley are back in action next Sunday – 29th January – when they face Cardiff City Ladies in the fourth round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup at the Lancashire FA County Ground in Leyland (2pm KO).
