Burnley FC Women will face AFC Fylde Women on Sunday in the Women’s FA Cup Second Round Proper.
A 2-0 win over Durham Cestria earlier in the month saw the Clarets secure a place in the Second Round, with goals from Katie Thomas and Courtney Willis on the day.
The Clarets enjoyed a positive run in the competition last season, reaching the Fourth Round and coming face-to-face with Manchester United of the Women’s Super League, two divisions above.
The Fourth Round was the furthest stage the team had ever reached in the competition, having reached the Third Round the previous season.
It was at the Second-Round stage that Burnley met Fylde Women last season, with the Clarets sealing victory late on through Nicola Worthington, to progress to the next round. However, Fylde came out winners when the two sides last met in the league in August this year.
Burnley FC Women Captain, Lauren Bracewell said: “I’m really excited. The FA Cup’s always good to play in. In the competition everybody wants to get as far as they can and facing Fylde, it’s a local derby, so it adds to the excitement.
“We want to get as far as possible. We got through to play Manchester United last season, so we want to hopefully get a little further this time and keep improving.”
“We beat them in this round of the Women’s FA Cup last season, so fingers crossed we put in a good performance and knock them out again.”
With a spot in the Third Round of the competition up for grabs, the visitors will be looking to learn from the league encounter and put in a pleasing performance on the day.
Burnley FC Women Manager, Matt Bee said: “Every game for us is important, irrespective of cup or league it is always important to approach games with the correct mentality and focus.
“We face a good Fylde side, a team who on paper go in as favourites with the season they are having. That said we know how to be effective in big games, we have done it for a number of seasons and this weekend is about targeting another strong performance.
“The game earlier this season was tight and was decided on fine margins, we were in a difficult moment at that point of the season and on Sunday we have to show how we’ve learnt from those type of games and how we have grown as a collective.
“It’s not a game that will throw up any tactical surprises, both teams know what each other are about, it’s a game that will be won by whichever group of players grab the moment.”
The game will take place at Kellamergh Park, Preston on Sunday 28th November. KO is 1pm.
