Former Salford City striker Douglas James-Taylor got the only goal of the game from the penalty spot for the visitors late in the first half after Max Thompson had been sent off early on for an alleged high foot.
In blustery conditions, Stoke came out the blocks the fastest and it took a good reaction save from Clarets’ goalkeeper Sam Waller to deny Emre Tezgel opening the scoring early on.
Max Thompson was then sent off by referee Lewis Smith for a contentious high foot with the ball swirling around in the wind at the County Ground, though Burnley pushed for the opener nonetheless and went close through Mark Helm’s low drive at goal which was palmed away.
Striker Joe McGlynn also rounded onrushing Stoke goalkeeper Nathan Broome but forced out wide from range, his shot was headed clear by a Potters’ defender before Bobby Thomas headed wide.
And after Ben Woods headed over the bar from inside the Potters’ box, the visitors made Michael Jackson’s side pay for their missed chances as they took the lead from the penalty spot via frontman James-Taylor.
Stoke took that one-goal advantage into the half-time break, and after the restart the conditions worsened with rain driving in amongst a now-howling wind.
Those conditions made it incredibly difficult for either side to get any flow to their game with chances coming at a premium throughout the second half.

Midfielder Helm went close again towards the end with an effort from distance going narrowly wide, but that was as good as it got for both teams.
At the other end, down by a man, the Clarets defended resolutely and denied any further chances on the rare occasions that the visitors ventured forwards.
Burnley boss Jackson brought both Owen Dodgson and Calen Gallagher-Allison off the bench as the Clarets searched for a route back into the game, though an equaliser for the ten-men didn’t come and it ended in defeat.
The U23s are next in action on Tuesday afternoon – November 30 – with a 2pm kick-off away at Bolton Wanderers’ Eddie Davies Academy in the Lancashire Senior Cup.
