Burnley FC Women round off their season on Sunday afternoon (May 1) as Middlesbrough Women FC visit the County Ground in Leyland.
Going into the final game of the campaign, the Claret women still boast a record of having lost just one game in all competitions since the turn of the calendar year, picking up the Lancashire FA Women’s Challenge Cup during that run.
Sat 4th in the table of the Northern Premier Division of FA Women’s National League, Burnley are unable to climb higher with AFC Fylde Women - who have already completed all of their fixtures - in 3rd, four points above.
With the two teams directly below the Clarets in touching distance however, three points on Sunday would see them cement that 4th-place finish. Last time out, the side did record another victory on the road in some style with an 8-0 win over West Bromwich Albion Women at Sutton Coldfield Town FC’s Central Ground.
Millie Ravening grabbed a hat-trick against the Baggies while there were also goals from Evie Priestley, Sarah Greenhalgh, Olivia Wilson, Nic Worthington and Lizzy Hamer.
Meanwhile, this weekend’s opponents Middlesbrough have endured a difficult campaign and ahead of the last game of the season, relegation has already been confirmed.
The Reds sit 11th, four points from safety so mathematically can no longer survive. Boro did however earn a point on their travels in the last outing away at Sheffield FC Women when Fran Ward grabbed a 93rd minute equaliser to snatch a 1-1 draw.
Starting 2022 as they meant to go on, the Claret women enjoyed a win against Andy Campbell’s side back in January’s reverse league fixture.
On a freezing cold day in the North East which saw a change of venue required on the morning of the game, Sarah Greenhalgh opened the scoring just before half time.
Burnley went on to grab two more goals in the second half through Ravening and Hamer, sandwiched by a disallowed goal for the hosts after an offside call provided a let off for the Clarets.
‘Boro did grab a late consolation goal through Jess Foster, but it ended in a 3-1 win for the visitors.
Entry at the Lancashire FA’s headquarters is free to all with the game itself kicking off at 2pm on Sunday.
