Burnley FC Women resume their league campaign with a trip to Middlesbrough Women FC this weekend, in their first game of the new year.
The Clarets finished 2021 with a draw away at Nottingham Forest Women in December, with Courtney Willis’s goal in the 51st minute, equalling out Rachel Brown’s header that had given the home side the lead within the opening quarter of the game.

A bright second half performance saw the visitors trouble Forest, with the Clarets coming close to taking the three points on the day, which will give them confidence heading into Sunday’s game.
Middlesbrough’s last fixture came against league leaders Derby County, who extended their lead at the top of the table by securing a 2-0 win on the day. The result left the Northeast side tenth in the table, four spots below Burnley.
Burnley will be without some players and coaching staff for the fixture, due to Covid-19 and injuries. However, the side have trained positively this week and defender Melissa Brown, who returned to the squad shortly before Christmas following a lengthy spell out due to injury, believes the togetherness of the group will stand them in good stead heading into the new year.
“We know Middlesbrough will be a tough game. Their recent results show they have all been close matches, so we must stay focused and defend with discipline, but also attack with the creativity and tenacity our players have in abundance.
“We are confident going into 2022 after a few strong performances at the end of last year. As a group we have developed a whole new level of togetherness that I feel will give us that extra edge we need, to come away with all three points on Sunday.”
The game will take place at Bedford Terrace, Billingham on Sunday 9th January. KO is 2pm.
