Assistant manager Ian Woan gave an honest assessment of Burnley’s 2-1 loss at home to Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup third round.
The Clarets took the lead in the first half courtesy of Jay Rodriguez, however, the Terriers fought back in the second half with two late goals to seal their place in the fourth round.
Burnley were missing several first team players due to either Covid-19 or injury. First team manager Sean Dyche and coach, Steve Stone, were also absent due to following mandatory Covid-19 isolation protocols.
“In the first half, we did enough, and the game could have been over if we had been a bit more ruthless in front of goal,” said Woan.
“We performed well in the first half. In the second half up until 73 minutes, we controlled the game but this season we are getting punished for little lapses of concentration. We got popped with a set play right at the end of the match.
“We are really disappointed as the starting eleven is as strong as we could go. We were disappointed to lose Chris Wood at half time with a slight groin injury and we are a little bit thin on the ground up front with our current absences.
“We took precaution with bringing Chris Wood off as he was definitely feeling something.
“Any level of football, the front of your team is vital. We looked to shuffle the back and we young McGlynn on the bench, but it was a tough ask for him. By bringing Wood off and missing his presence in the second half affected us, but credit to Huddersfield, they kept going and they made some good substitutions in the second half. They brought pace on and punished us for some half mistakes.”
Burnley’s focus now quickly turns to next Saturday’s Premier League encounter against Leicester City at Turf Moor, and Woan hopes more players will be available for when the Foxes arrive in Lancashire.
He added: “We are hopeful some faces will return next week. We are stretched to the limit at the moment. We work in a no excuse environment and at present that was the only starting eleven we could go with. Jack Cork could have started but we felt Dale Stephens needed a start.
“We had Kevin Long and Bobby Thomas on the bench too, alongside three U23 players. We are absolutely stretched at the moment.”
