Burnley exited the Emirates FA Cup in the third-round with a 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield at Turf Moor.
Jay Rodriguez had opened the scoring for the Clarets with a header midway through the first half, but two goals from the visitors in the closing stages saw them progress in the competition.
Pre-match, Burnley paid tribute to legendary former player and coach Jimmy Robson with a minute’s silence following his sad passing last month.
Led by assistant manager Ian Woan in the absence of boss Sean Dyche following his positive Covid-19 test earlier this week, Burnley brought Huddersfield goalkeeper Ryan Schofield into action early on with an in-swinging corner from midfielder Ashley Westwood which his opposite number had to palm away from danger on the line.
Rodriguez then linked up well with Chris Wood, firing just wide from the edge of the area, before testing Schofield with a powerful strike at goal having been threaded through neatly by Aaron Lennon.
And after narrowly missing out moments earlier on the stretch inside the box following more good work from Wood to chase down a lofted ball upfield, it was to be Rodriguez who opened the scoring midway through the first half.
Westwood instinctively dinked a first-time ball deep over the visitors’ backline for the frontman to head home in space past Schofield, netting his eighth goal in the competition for Burnley in just 13 appearances.
At the other end, with the last action of the first half deep into three minutes of time added on, Huddersfield’s Jon Russell struck the post with a close-range header before the Clarets scrambled the ball clear.
Midfielder Jack Cork was brought off the bench in place of Wood at the interval for Burnley and played his part in helping to soak up some pressure from the Terriers early on in the second half as both Pipa and Russell fired wide for Carlos Corberan’s side.
Rodriguez then went close to a second for the Clarets, but couldn’t connect with Phil Bardsley’s low cross under pressure inside the area at a tight angle.
Huddersfield opted to make the remainder of their substitutions before the 70-minute mark, and one of those – Sorba Thomas – fired across goal for teammate Josh Koroma to tap in an equaliser with around 20 minutes remaining.
Back in between the sticks for the Clarets after a COVID absence of his own, Nick Pope then tipped a header wide from Duane Holmes before Burnley brought on Owen Dodgson, a regular in Michael Jackson’s U23 side this campaign.
With just under five minutes to go though, Huddersfield’s Matty Pearson met Thomas’ corner and headed home the winner for the visitors, seeing the Clarets exit the FA Cup at the third-round stage.
James Tarkowski did go close to a leveller in stoppage time but could only guide his header over the bar.
The Clarets return to action in the Premier League next weekend as we welcome Leicester City to Turf Moor on Saturday, January 15 with a 3pm kick-off.
