Academy striker Benji Wetshi has signed a one-year professional contract, keeping him with the Club until the summer of 2026.

Wetshi made his first appearance of the season off the bench in last week's Lancashire FA Senior Cup victory over Barrow, and is now in his fourth season with the Clarets.

Speaking after signing his new contract, he said: “It’s a proud moment and I want to thank God for everything, because without it nothing would’ve been possible.

“As a scholar you just want to get that professional contract. There were lots of ups and downs with injuries, but I had faith in God and worked hard.

“It’s going to be really exciting to play against better teams this season and I’ve been in and around the U21s already – they’ve all been great with me.

“We’ll stay together as a team and see where the hard work takes us.”

Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Wetshi moved to London as a teenager and joined Burnley at U16s level.

Having penned scholarship terms ahead of the 2023/24 season, the 18-year-old has spent the last two years learning from U18s Manager and former striker Tony Philliskirk.

Wetshi’s goal scoring helped the team to the Professional Development League North title last term, and the teenager made 11 appearances for Andy Farrell’s U21s too.

His first goal at that level came in the team’s final match of the regular league season at Cardiff City, which the young Clarets won 4-1.

Academy Manager Chris Casper added: “Benji has shown great resilience since joining the Club, not only on the pitch but off the field too with having to learn the language.

“He impressed us with his performances last season and he has strong physical and technical attributes, which we hope will stand him in good stead going forwards.”
