Right-back reflects on narrow defeat to Palace

Kyle Walker said that the Clarets must to learn from Wednesday night's 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Turf Moor.

Reflecting on the game, the right-back spoke about his disappointment at conceding the goal that separated the two sides on the evening and insisted the squad need to take their chances and start turning performances into points on the board.

“It’s not the result that we want, it’s not the result that we need, especially with our home games, we need to start picking wins up quickly.

“Them coming back off a tough number of games we kind of thought that we could take that up. If the game probably runs on ten more minutes longer, I think we get a breakthrough. But it’s football and it’s a cutthroat business and we have to learn, and learn quickly, that we have to take our opportunities when they come because they are rare.”

It was Daniel Muñoz's goal on the 44th minute that made the difference on the evening and Walker was frustrated to concede having felt the side showed positives defensively compared to recent fixtures.

“That’s something that the lads have to learn from quickly. For some of them it’s their first experience in the Premier League and when people get chances, it’s a chance you’ve got to take – you’ve got take it with open arms, go and get that goal. Also, as defenders we’ve got to defend like our life depends on it. I think a couple of goals recently we’ve lapsed a little bit, I thought we were better today defensively. It’s still a little bit of a sloppy goal but we’ll take it as a learning curve, and we’ll move on to an important game now on Saturday at St James Park.

“The beauty about football is that we’ve got another game on Saturday to go and put it right.”

A decorated pro with a wealth of experience, what's Walker's message to his teammates moving forward?

“I said it in the huddle today; you go back to the basics of football. That’s running, that’s working for your teammate, that’s making sure that that final pass is the correct pass, to the right foot, at the right time and at the right pace. And things will come, I’ve seen it, I’ve been there. I’ve been there winning; I’ve been there losing and if you keep doing the basics right it will come. It needs to come quickly because we need to get points on the board as quick as possible to make sure that we are ultimately where we want to be at the end of the season. But the lads are giving everything, I can assure the fans that the lads are giving everything day in, day out. We’re working our socks off, we need to keep doing that and hopefully the tide will turn, and we’ll start getting some points on the board.”
