Josh Cullen said that he was disappointed that the Clarets couldn't come away with all three points at Deepdale on Saturday afternoon in what he called a 'decent performance'.

Speaking post-match, the Burnley captain said he was pleased to see the team create plenty of chances but reflected that they needed to be more clinical on the day.

“I think overall our performance was decent, on quite a difficult surface to play on especially in the second half when it cut up. But it was decided on fine margins today, I don’t need to say too much about the chances we had, we know as a team we’ve had plenty of chances and we’ve got to take them.

“That’s probably the story of the day, a decent performance but we’ve just got to be more clinical.”

Heading into the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, the Lilywhites had lost just once in their last eight games and made it a tricky encounter for the Clarets.

“Yes, they’re a difficult team to play against, they press man to man, they make it a physical game and you have to be up for that when you come here, and I think we were today.

“I think we competed well, we won our tackles, won our duels, were good on the second balls and we played some nice stuff at times as well. We created a couple of really good chances, unfortunately couldn’t take them and that’s where we know that we need to improve in these types of games to make sure that we come away with three points instead of one.”

Scott Parker's men did have plenty of chances, with Jaidon Anthony and Lyle Foster coming close. As a senior player how does Cullen encourage his teammates to keep their heads up when the ball isn't finding its way into the net in those moments and the game is ticking on?

“We’re the professionals out there, we have the game plan, and we know that we have to stick to it. We know what we’re trying to do to give us the best chance to create opportunities and to create chances. There are different ways to do that of course and throughout the game we have to adapt. When time ticks on, you might have to try and force things a little bit, but not do that overly so, you don’t want to come away from what we’ve been doing throughout the game that’s got us the chances.

“It’s a difficult place to come. We’ve got a point; we had the chances to win the game and that’s the review really. Now we go again next Friday.”

The point ensures another clean sheet and means the Clarets have gone over 1,000 minutes without conceding a league goal.

“It’s something we pride ourselves on. We’re proud of being hard to beat and if you can’t win games, don’t lose them. We come away with a point thanks to that defensive record and being solid again here at a tough place. They’ve beaten some good sides here and not lost in a while here. So, to still keep a clean sheet that’s a positive but the overriding factor is a little bit of disappointment because we had the chances to win the game.”

The visitors brought 6,000 travelling fans to the encounter and Cullen was full of praise for the incredible backing throughout.

“The fans were magnificent today. Unbelievable backing again, they made it feel like a home game at times to be honest. We thank them for their support, unfortunately we’re disappointed for them that we couldn’t give them the result that we all wanted today. But all I can say is thanks to them, we go again next week and then back for a big cup game here. So, things to look forward to and we just have to keep pushing on.”
