Ahead of the summer break, Vitinho took the opportunity to reflect of what was a challenging campaign for the Clarets but one that he believes he will learn from.
“For me it was a good experience, my first time in the Premier League. I think when you go to the Premier League everything’s different, a good different. You have to work more, mentally you have to be strong. I think the experience is good, unfortunately the rest of it was not good for everyone.
“I think especially because we had a lot of players who hadn’t played in the Premier League before, we improved a lot, we showed this at the end. But it’s life, sometimes you work hard, and you don’t get the results. So, we have to continue working hard.”
A hard-fought draw at the London Stadium against West Ham in March saw the Clarets go on to enjoy some positive results, including wins against Brentford and Sheffield United, and draws against Chelsea, Wolves, Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United.
“For a lot of us it was our first time in the Premier League, me included. It’s a league with a lot of good players, good teams, everyone is good.
“I think we started to play our game and really understand how the league worked towards the end. This cost us a lot, but we improved a lot. We’re going to come back and now we know how we need to start, and this is going to be important for everyone.”
The 24-year-old is familiar with the Championship having helped the Club to the title with 101 points. What's he expecting from next season?
"I think everyone knows how the season is going to be. It’s going to be tough, it’s going to be difficult, we are going to need to work hard every day, we have to have a good mentality and work hard. I think after the Premier League, the Championship is the most difficult league in the world. A lot of games, which is good but mentally you have to be strong in the Championship.
“I think we have a good group, the players who have been here a long time and the newer players, everyone tries to help each other. We are a team on the pitch and a team off the pitch."
Finally, despite a tough campaign Vitinho is full of praise for the Clarets fans who have backed him and the squad all season.
“I have to be honest; I love them. They help me a lot. Maybe they don’t know but they help us a lot. When we are on the pitch, we feel stronger doing it with them. I want to say thank you for the support and next season we go again.”
