Sit-down interview with Women’s Head Coach

Burnley Women Head Coach Rebecca Sawiuk has reflected positively on her first season in charge of the Clarets, in which the team achieved its highest ever league finish.

Sawiuk’s appointment was confirmed in July 2023, with the former Watford boys’ Academy Lead Coach joining from Loughborough University where she was the Director of Football.

Burnley finished 2nd in the Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League, an improvement on the 3rd place finish of 2022/23.

When asked to reflect on the campaign as a whole, she said: “It’s been a really exciting journey.

“I’ve loved the highs, the lows and everything in between of a fantastic first year at the football club.

“The ownership group here have an exciting vision, passion and enthusiasm for Burnley Women, so it was an easy decision to come and join this project and I have absolutely no regrets.”

It was a busy start to life in Lancashire for Sawiuk, with the Clarets recruiting and integrating 10 new players into the squad.

“We needed to bring in some quality,” Sawiuk explained.

“Lola (Ogunbote, Head of Women’s Football) did a fantastic job having conversations with top talent and looking to strengthen in key areas within the squad before I was in the building.

“We then had the opportunity to evolve the vision together and bring in players like Brenna McPartlan.

“It’s not easy to transition 10 players in at once and the recruitment continued into the season, with Gracie Prior coming in before the Stourbridge fixture in October.

“It was an evolution that had its challenges, with the team having to gel quickly before the opening day of the season against Liverpool Feds, but everybody contributed to that in a positive way.”
