A young Burnley Under 21s conceded a late equaliser to draw one all after an end to end match against local rivals Wigan Athletic at Leyland’s County Ground.
The Clarets endured difficult conditions in the first-half, playing into a blustery wind and with a strong sun in their eyes, while Wigan Athletic dominated possession in the early stages forcing Charlie Casper into a number of saves.
Latics first teamer Chris Sze came closest after a mix up on the edge of Burnley’s box before Will Hugill had Burnley’s first shots on goal around the 17th minute. His first effort winning a corner. His second skidding the wrong side of the post.
Joe Westley scored Burnley’s opener in the 28th minute. Lewis Richardson made a mazy run down the right of area before setting up Westley to precisely place the ball into the bottom right corner.
The goal changed the mood and tempo of the game with Burnley taking control for the remainder of the first half.
Andy Farrell made two changes at half-time. Callum West and Bradley Grant coming on for Lucas Wane and Vernon Masara.
Burnley’s best chances for the second-half came in the final twenty minutes of the match.
First, Lewis Richardson sent in a clever cross from the left hand side which Joe Westley hit straight at the goalkeeper.
Then, Bradley Grant initially did well after finding space in the penalty area but blazed his shot over the bar.
Burnley were left to regret missed chances when Wigan Athletic equalised with just two minutes remaining on the clock.
Wigan’s Chris Cze chased on to a hopeful ball from the visitors and slid it underneath Charlie Casper from the edge of the area to level the scores.
Will Hugill had one final effort for the Clarets before full-time but blasted it wide from just inside the box.
While Wigan could have won it with literally the last kick of the game. Charlie McKee dispossessed Callum West inside the centre circle before setting Sze free to the edge of the box only for the striker’s shot to crash against the crossbar.
