Everton won the Premier League Cup contest after a hard fought battle at the Pure Stadium, Southport. After a goalless first half, goals from Rhys Hughes and Tom Cannon gave the Toffees a 2-0 win.
It was Burnley’s third Group D game in this season’s Premier League Cup. The young Clarets won 3-0 at Sheffield United but lost 2-1 at home to Peterborough United last week. Everton, who play in Premier League 2 Division 1, lost 3-1 at home to the Blades in their first group game.
Lukas Jensen made a return in goal, the Dane is on loan at managerless Carlisle United. He was one of two changes from the side that beat Middlesbrough 2-0 in the league last Friday. Jake Rooney came in for the suspended Bobby Thomas. Mark Helm took over captaincy duties.
There was a familiar face in the Toffees’ dug out, ex-Claret David Unsworth was in charge of the young Evertonians.
The Clarets had the better chances in a tight first half. Just before the half-hour mark Burnley came close to opening the scoring when Ne-Jai Tucker delivered a tempting back-post cross. Owen Dodgson was close to converting put Kyle John did well to divert the ball behind for a corner.
Shortly after that Scottish youth international Joe McGlynn saw his goalbound effort blocked for a corner.
Eight minutes before half-time, Ben Woods had a 25-yard effort comfortably saved by Crosby-born goalkeeper Harry Tyrer.
Everton youngster Cannon went close in the 50th minute. Burnley appealed for a foul on Tucker just outside the home box, but when those claims were waved away, Everton broke quickly and Cannon’s 25-yard shot curled narrowly wide.
Jensen was called into action 20 minutes from time when Lewis Dobbin’s effort was deflected. The Dane did well to collect the shot.
But the Burnley goalkeeper was beaten four minutes later when substitute Rhys Hughes curled home a superb free-kick from 25 yards after Max Thompson had been penalised.
Ten minutes from time, Michael Jackson’s side went close to an equaliser. A neat flick from substitute Thompson fell into the path of Ben Woods but Tyrer smothered his attempt.
Aintree-born striker Cannon doubled Everton’s advantage seven minutes from time. He finished well after a clever run and cut back from Hughes.
Burnley had a chance to pull a goal back in time added on. Anthony Glennon was pushed in the box by Stanley Mills but Thompson fired over from the spot.
The young Clarets are next in action on Monday night in a league fixture against Birmingham City at Nuneaton (7pm).
