Burnley U23s produced a magnificent second-half performance to come from behind to collect three valuable points at Leyland in a storming 5-1 win over Newcastle United.
Ben Woods was the star of the show with a fantastic hat-trick. Rob Harker and Max Thompson added to the tally.
The Clarets trailed at half time through Jay Turner-Cooke’s opportunist strike with Rob Harker seeing his penalty saved by England youth international goalkeeper Max Thompson.
The game was blessed with some fabulous goals. Woods’ sensational free kick was probably the pick of the lot.
Michael Jackson brought Max Thompson back into the side and paired Rob Harker and Dara Costelloe up front. Thompson and Ne-Jai Tucker played wide with Woods and skipper Mark Helm in the middle of the park.
First-half
There was an early chance for Ne-Jai Tucker from a low cross delivered by Max Thompson but he shot over.
Burnley missed a golden opportunity when Rob Harker had his penalty saved after 21 minutes. The former Bury striker was tripped in the box and elected to go to the goalkeeper’s right but saw United’s Thompson pull off a fine diving save.
The Clarets paid the price for missed opportunities after 29 minutes when Turner-Cooke fired home from distance.
Burnley’s Max Thompson went close two minutes before half time. The ball fell too him in the six-yard box but at full stretch his left-foot effort went over the bar.
Second-half
Ben Woods got Burnley level after 56 minutes with a wonder strike. Newcastle failed to clear a Burnley corner and when the ball fell to Woods he smashed it home left footed.
Woods got his second on 65 minutes and, arguably, it was an even better strike. Harker was fouled 30 yards from goal. Woods fired home the free-kick into the top corner.
Harker made it 3-1 with 15 minutes left. He latched on to a Tucker through ball and calmly lobbed the advancing goalkeeper. It was his first goal since his return from long-term injury.
Thompson made it 4-1 with a fabulous solo effort. He ran at the heart of the Magpies’ defence before coolly slotting the ball home past his namesake.
Woods got his hat-trick in the 90th minute. Costelloe was tripped by the goalkeeper with the goal at the mercy. Woods stepped up and fired the ball past Thompson to secure the match ball.
Michael Jackson’s side moved up to eighth in the Premier League 2 Division 2 table to stand five points outside the play-offs. Burnley still have games in hand on some of their rivals.
Next up for Burnley is a Lancashire Senior Cup semi-final at the Wham Stadium against Accrington Stanley on Monday (7pm).
