U23s PREVIEW: BURNLEY V EVERTON - Image 1

You will be able to watch live as Michael Jackson’s U23 side play the fourth of their six Premier League Cup group stage games on Friday night when they welcome Sheffield United to the County Ground.

The game will be streamed on YouTube, Clarets+ & TikTok with kick-off in Leyland scheduled for 7PM and full match commentary from Phil Bird.

Burnley were successful in the reverse fixture – the group stage opener - beating United 3-0 away from home back in October. Michael Mellon, Ne-Jai Tucker and Max Thompson were all on the scoresheet in a game played at Chesterfield FC’s Technique stadium.

However, the Clarets have since lost out away at Everton and at home to Peterborough United. Both reverse fixtures against those opponents also come within the next two weeks, with progression in the competition still very much a possibility.

Last time out, Jackson’s side made the second-longest journey of their Premier League 2, Division 2 campaign as they travelled to Norwich City.

Striker Joe McGlynn got them off to a good start scoring the opener early on, but the hosts fought back in the second half to find a leveller and went onto snatch victory with virtually the last kick of the game four minutes deep into time added on.

Despite their defeat, the Clarets remain in the play-off mix and sit 7th at the time of writing, two points off the top five.

As a Category Two academy, Friday Night’s opponents Sheffield United ply their trade in the Northern Division of the Professional Development League, a tier below Burnley.

In a system where promotion isn’t possible, the Blades won their league last season but lost in the Northern section play-off final to eventual national champions Birmingham City.

This time around, they sit second and currently trail table toppers Coventry City by two points.

The Blades last outing saw them come from behind to win 2-1 away at Wigan Athletic.

In terms of the Premier League Cup group stage, United are currently four points from four games. They lost at home to both the Clarets and Everton, but drew away at Peterborough and managed to overcome the Toffees when the two sides met on Merseyside.
