Lancashire Senior Cup Final beckons for Clarets against Reds

Burnley’s U23 side play out their penultimate Premier League 2, Division 2 game of the regular league season against Aston Villa on Monday night (April 25).

The Villains visit the County Ground in Leyland for what will be the Clarets’ last home game of the campaign, and going into it, a play-off push is in full swing.

Currently 6th, Burnley sit a place outside of the top five which is where they want to be come the end of the season.

All of the three teams directly above the Clarets – Stoke City, Norwich City & Nottingham Forest – are within three points and in touching distance, though the two latter of those have superior goal differences.

Stoke though have a worse goal difference, and it is the Potters whom Burnley fought out a goalless draw against away from home last time out.

An action packed first half saw chances at both ends, though after the restart, it became a cagey affair with neither team able to find the breakthrough.

This Monday’s opponents Villa meanwhile sit 9th, and with just two games remaining, they are seven points off the play-offs so mathematically cannot reach the top five.

Managed by former Welsh defender Mark Delaney – who also played for the club – the Villains were last season’s FA Youth Cup winners.

The Midlands outfit also started this season on the front foot with a strong side, and back in October beat the Clarets 4-1 at their Bodymoor Heath training ground in the reverse league fixture.

Jacob Bedeau the only goalscorer on the night as Villa’s starting eleven included Caleb and Carney Chukwuemeka, Cameron Archer & Jaden Philogene-Bidace.

At that point, Delaney’s side were flying high and firmly in the play-off picture. Post-January though with a culmination of players going out on loan and others getting themselves into the first-team picture, Villa have dropped off.

They did though pick up a first success in five in their last outing, winning 3-1 on the road against Sunderland.

You can watch the Clarets meeting with Villa live on both YouTube and Clarets+ with commentary from Phil Bird.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00pm, and the club will also provide coverage via Twitter - @ClaretsAcademy – while a post-match report will be published on the Burnley FC website.

Burnley then round off the regular league season away at champions Fulham on Friday evening – April 29.
