Michael Jackson’s U23 side take on Everton in the fifth of their six Premier League Cup group stage games, knowing that only a win will keep their hopes of progression in the competition alive.
Scheduled for a 7pm kick-off on Friday night at the Lancashire FA’s County Ground in Leyland, Burnley currently sit bottom of the four-team group having won one and lost three.
Progression is still a possibility though, if the Clarets are able to win both of their remaining games - against the Toffees and away at Peterborough United – and other results go their way.
Most recently in the competition, Jackson’s side lost out 1-0 to Sheffield United in a wind-swept encounter at the County Ground. They did however progress from the Central League Cup group-stage earlier this month with a 100% record having beaten both Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers in the space of three days.
Involvement in the two cup competitions – and seeing Monday’s fixture against Newcastle United postponed - has meant that Burnley have not played a league fixture since 21st January.
Results elsewhere in the meantime have seen the Clarets slip to 10th place in the Premier League 2, Division 2 table at the time of writing, though they remain just three points outside the top five and firmly in the playoff mix.
As for Friday night’s opponents Everton, David Unsworth’s side currently top the PL Cup group with nine points having played a game more than Burnley. In a highly competitive group, only victory for the Toffees would guarantee top spot and progression.
All four teams involved could still qualify for the knockout stages of the competition with Everton most recently beating Sheffield United away from home in their last PL Cup outing having won the competition once previously.
Played at Southport’s Haig Avenue, Unsworth’s Blues also beat Burnley 2-0 in the reverse fixture back in October.
They play their league football in a division higher than the Clarets, sitting 9th and losing 2-1 at home to Leicester City last time out. Having led through Joe Anderson’s effort early on, the Toffees conceded two second half goals to end up on the losing side.
