Striker Sam Unwin is looking forward to taking on Wrexham at the Barnfield Training Centre as the U23s step up their pre-season campaign.
The Clarets meet the National League side in a behind-closed-doors game in their fifth pre-season friendly, after taking on Rangers B, Ayr United, Lancaster City and Ashton Athletic.
And Unwin believes Wednesday’s encounter with the Welsh side will be the toughest test yet for the Clarets' youngsters as they gain further valuable experience.
The former Manchester City and Bury man said: “I think it’s probably going to be our hardest game in pre-season so far. I think we have done well so far and are still developing as a team.
“Some of the results haven’t gone our way. We’ve got new faces in the team and we’re still getting our fitness up and coming together.
“But I think this will be a good test for us as a young side, coming up against an older and experienced side.
“It’s important to win games and the mentality is to win games and although it is only pre-season we still want to get the win and carry the confidence from the weekend into the game.”
The U23s secured their opening pre-season win against Ashton Athletic last Saturday to secure third place in Lancaster City's Lockstep Trophy.
The squad - currently being managed by Michael Jackson - added a handful of new faces over the summer, with Jacob Bedeau, Harry Williams, Mark Helm joining and five of last year’s U18s stepping up.
And Unwin believes the team are improving every week and understanding one another with every training session with friendlies to follow against Tranmere, Grimsby and Stockport before the Premier League 2 season starts in mid-August.
“I think the group is still developing. I wouldn’t say we are 100% there yet, but every game we are getting better and the new faces are starting to understand the Burnley way," the striker added.
“You can see it in training and every week we are improving and becoming a better team and the progress is there, so hopefully come the season start we will all be ready.”
