Burnley U21s kick start their 2026/27 season with a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League Cup on Friday night.
The young Clarets are the defending champions of this competition and have been placed in Group E alongside Fleetwood Town and Preston North End this time around.
Andy Farrell’s team are raring to go after a busy pre-season schedule, which included a draw against League Two outfit Bristol Rovers last month.
There was also the final of the 2025/26 Lancashire FA Senior Cup last week, in which Burnley beat Blackburn Rovers to secure the trophy.
It finished 2-1 at the County Ground in Leyland, with a late Blackburn strike unable to cancel out first-half efforts from Zach Johnson and a trialist.
Farrell now has a new-looking squad to choose from, with several of last year’s second-year scholars stepping up after signing professional contracts.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are an established category one outfit and finished 22nd in the 29-team Premier League 2 standings last term.
They exited the Premier League Cup at the group stage in 2025/26, so will want to do better this season.
Wolves’ most recent pre-season outing was a Midlands derby against West Bromwich Albion last weekend, which they won 3-1 thanks to goals from Minkyu Ji, Dani Angel and Emi Ballard-Matthews.
It finished 2-1 to Wolves the last time we played them at U21s level, in August 2025. Fletcher Holman gave our opponents the lead in Leyland, before Michael Mellon restored parity 15 minutes from time.
Tom Edozie then stole the three points in stoppage-time, with now first-team regular Mateus Mané providing the assist.
