Burnley U21s are aiming to claim a fifth straight victory in all competitions when they visit Wigan Athletic’s Christopher Park training ground (WN6 8JT) on Tuesday afternoon.
The young Clarets are in a rich vein of form and have won seven of their last eight matches, with that defeat coming away at league leaders Sheffield United at the start of October.
Their last outing was a convincing 3-1 victory over Barnsley last Tuesday, although Andy Farrell’s side did have to come from a goal down to claim all three points.
Callum West opened the scoring after just five minutes for the visitors, but Joe Bauress hit back with a fantastic effort from just inside the Tykes’ half to restore parity.
Vernon Masara struck his third goal of the campaign just before half-time and João Mendes confirmed all three points with a close-range finish after the break.
After 10 Professional Development League matches Burnley U21s have 17 points to their name thanks to five wins and two draws.
Wigan are fighting at the other end of the table and are currently rock bottom having accrued five points from a possible 30.
The Latics are winless in their last five matches in all competitions and drew 2-2 with Stoke City at Clayton Wood on Friday afternoon, with both of their goals coming from Finn O’Boyle.
Managed by Chris Brown, Wigan were beaten 2-0 at Fleetwood Town in their last league outing three days prior.
