Burnley U21s’ 2024/25 Premier League Cup campaign starts with a lengthy trip to Luton Town on Friday night.
The tournament was first introduced to the academy football calendar in 2013 with the aim of improving the competitiveness of the Professional Development Phase programme.
32 clubs from Premier League 2 and the Professional Development League have been split into eight groups of four, with knockout rounds scheduled following the completion of the group stage.
Burnley are in Group G alongside Luton, Brighton & Hove Albion and Reading, with the latter two representing a higher quality category opponent category wise to what we’d usually face.
Andy Farrell’s side’s latest outing was a 1-0 defeat on the road at Sheffield United earlier this week, which ended a run of three straight wins.
Ismaila Coulibaly’s long-range effort was the difference between the two sides on a brisk day in York, and the young Clarets will be keen to bounce back with a victory here.
Luton’s U21s play a unique games schedule that features a variety of friendlies, and the young Hatters beat Scottish Premiership side Rangers’ B team in their last match at Kenilworth Road earlier this month.
Managed by Alex Lawless, Luton were then beaten 2-1 by Oxford United in a behind-closed-doors friendly last week.
Friday night’s game is a 7pm kick-off at Kenilworth Road (LU4 8AW), with supporters able to attend should they wish.
Seats will be unreserved in the main enclosure, with entry £5 for adults and £1 for those aged 17 or under, and you can pay on arrival.
Alternatively, you can follow updates on X @ClaretsAcademy and a match report will follow the final whistle on www.burnleyfootballclub.com.
