An in-depth look back at a previous encounter between the Clarets & the Lilywhites

11/09/2010 - Burnley 4 - 3 Preston North End (Turf Moor)

Jay Rodriguez's last minute winner proved to be the difference in an entertaining seven-goal Lancashire derby against Preston North End, after Chris Iwelumo had netted a hat-trick for the Clarets at Turf Moor.

The Scottish striker gave Burnley the lead in the 9th minute, before the visitors replied through Adam Barton and Keith Treacy to give North End a half-time advantage.

Jon Parkin then gave Preston a 3-1 lead with 20 minutes left on the clock, but Iwelumo grabbed his second of the game with a sweet volley, before equalising moments later with a crashing header in the 88th minute.

Just as the game looked to be closing in as a draw, substitute Rodriguez then powered home the winning goal in the last minute to give Burnley all three points in the derby.

Preston started brightly and had an early chance when Treacy saw his effort denied by Brian Jensen, with Josh King then seeing a close range strike blocked by Danny Fox.

But it was the Clarets who took the lead nine minutes in, when former Lilywhites winger Ross Wallace delivered the perfect corner into the area for Iwelumo to head home past Andy Lonergan.

It took the away side just over 10 minutes to reply, as Barton latched onto Parkin's flick on and broke into the area and fired into the bottom corner to draw the scores level.

North End were then ahead just after the half-hour mark, when Treacy picked up a loose ball on the edge of box, before bursting into the area and drilling it past Jensen into the far corner.

With Preston leading at the break, the Clarets came out and tried to claw themselves back into it, but it was the away side who struck again when Treacy turned provider and picked out the unmarked Parkin inside the area to guide home on the half-volley with 20 minutes left to play.

As the game closed in towards the final six minutes, Burnley halved the deficit when Iwelumo volley in his second of the game with a fabulous strike, before the towering forward sealed his hat-trick and headed home the equaliser from Graham Alexander's ball with just two minutes left on the clock.

The turnaround was then complete in stoppage time, as a short corner routine fell kindly for Rodriguez inside the box, with the young striker glancing home past Lonergan to seal all three points for the hosts.
