Young Clarets travel to Welsh capital

Burnley U21s finish their regular Professional Development League season with a trip to Cardiff City on Tuesday afternoon.

The young Clarets are guaranteed to finish 2nd in the North section table regardless of the result, but will be eager to bounce back from last week’s Premier League Cup defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

It finished 2-0 to the Londoners on Wednesday night, with a 75th minute penalty ultimately being the difference between the two sides.

After Harry Murphy sent Charlie Casper the wrong way from the spot Andy Farrell’s side were forced to push forwards in search of an equaliser, and Kieran Petrie hit Rangers’ second deep into stoppage-time.

Prior to that the U21s had won five straight matches in all competitions and their latest league fixture finished in a 3-0 victory over Fleetwood Town.

The young Clarets have 56 points from their 30 matches to date and are five points clear of 3rd-placed Hull City, who have already finished their campaign.

Cardiff City compete in the South section of the division and are 6th in the 11-team standings with 44 points from 30 matches.

The Bluebirds ended a run of three straight defeats by beating Watford 3-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium last week.

Managed by Matt Bloxham, the Welsh outfit took a 2-0 lead into the half-time break thanks to Freddie Cook’s header and Cody Twose’s curled effort.

Josh Beecher made it three shortly after the restart and Watford were able to find a late consolation through Travis Akomeah but couldn’t affect the result.

Our U21s were victorious the last time they visited the Welsh capital, winning 2-1 in August 2024.

Supporters are welcome to show their support in person for free, with the match taking place at the Cardiff City Stadium (CF11 8AZ). Kick-off is 2pm.
