Following an emphatic victory at Coventry City last week, Burnley U21s return to home soil for the visit of Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night.

A flying start to the match made it a fairly comfortable afternoon in Warwickshire, with the young Clarets eventually winning 6-2.

Burnley scored three times in the opening 16 minutes on a wet and windy day, with Kamarni Ryan scoring two of those to take his season’s tally to 16.

Tommy McDermott was the other player to score in that lively opening, when the midfielder was left with a fortuitous tap in following good work from Ryan.

It was 4-0 at half-time thanks to Joe Bauress but the Sky Blues hit back straight after the interval through Conrad Ambursley.

The three-goal difference lasted just a minute, though, as Hamzat Balogun met Joe Ashton’s cross to finish low.

Kai Yearn later scored the hosts’ second of the day but, having netted against Coventry at Turf Moor earlier this season, Alex Healy-Byrne did so again here to complete the scoring.

Heading into this match Burnley are 3rd in the 11-team Professional Development League North section with 38 points from 19 matches.

Wigan are currently fighting at the other end of the table and, although there is no relegation in the Academy system, the Latics will be keen to start climbing if possible.

They are currently 9th with 16 points from 19 matches, courtesy of four wins and four draws.

On a positive note, most of their results have come in recent weeks and the Latics are unbeaten in their last five matches – a run that includes three wins.

They drew 2-2 with Peterborough United last time out, with the Posh taking an early lead.

Tom Costello restored parity from the penalty spot but after the forward missed another opportunity from 12 yards, K’Marni Miller was the other Wigan player to make the scoresheet.

Burnley got the better of Chris Brown’s side when they visited their Christopher Park Training Ground earlier this season.

It finished 2-0 to the young Clarets, with McDermott netting twice on a tricky afternoon conditions wise.
