Burnley U21s will match last season’s Premier League Cup run if they are to beat Colchester United on Thursday night.

The young Clarets were beaten semi-finalists last term and welcome the East Anglian outfit to Lancashire for this quarter final tie under the lights.

Andy Farrell’s team’s last outing saw a four-match unbeaten run come to an end, with Fulham proving to be too strong of an opposition at their Motspur Park training ground.

Thomas Olyott broke the deadlock for the Cottagers and it was 2-0 when Jonathan Esenga reacted quickest to tap home a loose ball in the penalty area.

Zach Johnson scored his second goal in as many games to reduce the arrears on the stroke of half-time, but Fulham added a third to ensure the three points stayed down south.

After progressing through Group F, the Clarets’ Premier League Cup campaign continued with a 3-2 victory over Brentford in the last 16.

Kian McMahon-Brown stole the headlines with a hat-trick in Leyland that night, and the team will be keen to put on another show here.

Colchester United run a category two academy, meaning they compete in the Professional Development League.

The Us currently sit 18th in those 20-team standings having taken 18 points form the same number of matches, courtesy of five wins and three draws.

A 4-1 defeat at Cardiff City last time out ended a four-match unbeaten run, which included their last 16 Premier League Cup victory over Swansea City.

It finished 1-0 at the JobServe Community Stadium that night, with skipper Frankie Edwards netting the winner in the second half.

Burnley came out on top when these two teams met in the Professional Development League last season.

Welsh winger Tom Tweedy scored either side of half-time to give the Clarets full control, before substitute Basilio Socoliche completed the scoring as the match entered stoppage-time.
