Young Clarets look to continue strong form

Burnley U21s are back on home soil on Monday night and will be keen to earn another three Premier League 2 points against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Andy Farrell’s side have lost just one of their last seven matches in all competitions and were victorious in a league encounter against Stoke City earlier this week.

It finished 3-1 to the young Clarets but the result doesn’t tell the whole story, with two red cards for the Potters killing a large portion of the second half as a contest.

Zach Johnson broke the deadlock after just five minutes, before Stoke were reduced to 10 men.

They were then down to nine three minutes into the second half and Burnley made their advantage count, with Roman Egan-Riley and Vernon Masara’s goals putting the result beyond doubt.

Stoke scored a consolation goal in stoppage time but it wasn’t enough to prevent our third league win of the season.

After 17 outings, Farrell’s team are 27th in the 29th-team table with 12 points.

Brighton & Hove Albion currently sit more comfortably in the standings, having claimed 23 points from a possible 51.

The Seagulls will have been disappointed to lose 4-3 to Fulham just over a week ago, surrendering a two-goal lead and finding themselves 4-2 down with 13 minutes to play.

Tyler Silsby struck a late third to make the final stages interesting, but Brighton were unable to extend their unbeaten run to four matches.

Shannon Ruth is the main man in their dugout. After a playing career in non-league, his coaching career began with Chelsea and he first joined the Seagulls in 2018.

These two teams met twice in the Premier League Cup group stage last season, with Farrell’s team winning the home fixture 2-0 at Turf Moor.

Tom Tweedy opened the scoring from close range in the first half, and a second half own goal ensured the three points would stay in Lancashire.

The young Clarets then headed to the south coast in December 2024, contesting a goalless draw on an extremely windy afternoon.

Tickets for this 7pm kick-off at the County Ground, Leyland (PR25 2LF) can be purchased on the day, although Burnley season ticket holders can get in for free by showing their season ticket at the turnstiles.

Other adults are priced at £5, while concessions are £2.50.
