Goals from Tom Tweedy and Tommy McDermott earned Burnley U21s a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic on Tuesday afternoon and extended the team’s winning run to five in all competitions.
Both midfielders struck in the second half at the Latics’ Christopher Park training ground to increase their Professional Development League points tally to 20 from 11 matches.
Andy Farrell named a much-changed line-up from the team that started last week’s win over Barnsley, with Alex Healy-Byrne and Murray Campbell stepping into the defence.
Will Hugill retuned to the heart of the midfield, with Joe Bevan and Tom Tweedy starting either side of striker Joe Westley.
A quiet start to the match saw Tweedy have the first chance of note, but the Welshman could only fire over having been found by Joe Ashton in the 16th minute.
Clarets ‘keeper Lewis Forshaw was called into action for the first time just after the half hour, holding a deflected effort from Wigan first teamer Chris Sze.

Both teams were willing to battle hard on the tricky playing surface and Sze was one of three players to be booked before the end of the first half.
McDermott and a Latics trialist were the other two players to find their way into the referee’s notebook, with the teams going into the break level.
Farrell’s team talk seemed to have the desired effect, though, with Burnley taking the lead 49 minutes in.
After good work on the right, Bevan teed up Tweedy to fire into the top left corner with the help of the bar for his third goal of the season.
The goal seemed to spark the hosts into life and right-back Harry McHugh shot narrowly wide twice in a two-minute spell.
However, McDermott was able to dent their momentum with another really well taken goal in the 56th minute.
Having rode the tackle of an opposition player, Burnley’s 10 surged forward and picked out the same comer as his team-mate with a powerful strike.

Farrell then turned to his bench for the first time as Bevan and Hugill made way for João Mendes and Charlie Veevers, with the latter featuring for the first time in six weeks because of an injury.
Alex Healy-Byrne and McDermott were withdrawn soon after too as Hamzat Balogun and Brandon Ly entered the fray for the final 20 minutes.
Burnley weren’t content with their two-goal lead and continued to push forward.
Substitute Veevers smacked a post and later forced Wigan’s on-trial goalkeeper to palm an effort over the bar, while Ly headed a presentable chance wide.
Westley thought he had netted a third goal that the young Clarets’ performance deserved in the final minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Burnley stay 2nd in the PDL North section and welcome Coventry City to Turf Moor on Tuesday 29th October. Kick-of is 7pm.
