Burnley U21s were undone by first-half goals from Morgan Bates and Jacob Cook as they lost 2-0 to Swansea City on Monday night.

Despite an improved display after the break, the young Clarets were unable to breach the Welsh team’s defence at the Swansea.com Stadium.

There were five changes to the side that started Friday’s 2-0 victory at Birmingham City, with Jon Ander Vilar Robinson returning in goal.

Hamzat Balogun and Murray Campbell stepped in at right and centre-back respectively, while Charlie Veevers played in central midfield and Welshman Tom Tweedy started on the left flank.

In a bitty start to the game Swansea took the lead in the 11th minute, when a mix up at the back presented the ball for Bates to score from close range.

The hosts continued their pressure on the Clarets goal with Bates, Ben Lloyd and Josh Ginnelly all shooting wide in a four-minute spell.

They then made it 2-0 before the half hour, with Cook picking out the bottom right corner from 20 yards.

Any Farrell’s side stemmed the tide and could have pulled one back on the stroke of half-time, but Swans ‘keeper Kit Margetson produced a strong one-on-one save to deny Tweedy.

The young Clarets re-emerged from the dressing room with more of a bite about them, and Julien Vetro and Tommy McDermott both worked Margetson within six minutes of the restart.

A couple of chances then fell striker Kamarni Ryan’s way, but after running the ball out of play he had a shot blocked behind.

Farrell made a triple change on the hour, replacing Balogun, Vetro and Ryan with Alex Healy-Byrne, Basilio Socoliche and Benji Wetshi.

Socoliche got a shot off within minutes and Campbell then had one of our better chances of the night but shot straight at Margetson from close range following a corner.

Joe Bauress and McDermott made way for Marley Leuluai and Brandon Ly in the 78th minute and the Clarets kept pushing forwards in search of an equaliser.

Substitute Healy-Byrne came closest to netting, but was denied by a flying save in second-half stoppage time.

With 44 points to their name from 25 matches, Farrell and his players stay 3rd in the Professional Development League North section table.
