Burnley U21s returned to winning ways with an emphatic 4-1 Premier League Cup victory over Luton Town on Friday night.
A Joe Westley brace accompanied by a Kamarni Ryan header and late Joe Bauress strike ensured that the young Clarets started their Group G campaign with all three points at Kenilworth Road.
Manager Andy Farrell made four changes to the side that started Tuesday’s league match against Sheffield United, with Sam Waller making his first appearance of the season in goal.
Brandon Ly and Tommy McDermott were given starting berths having both come off the bench in Yorkshire, while Ryan took the left forward role.
It didn’t take long for Ryan to make an impact as the 18-year-old burst forward and crossed perfectly for Westley to net his first goal of the season after just five minutes.
The young Clarets dominated the first half and Ly looked threatening in the eight role, dropping a shoulder expertly before firing narrowly wide of the left-hand post.
It was 2-0 after 21 minutes when Ryan surged onto a Tom Tweedy corner and planted a powerful header into the roof of the net.
Despite their lead Burnley kept their foot on the accelerator and almost had a third goal before half-time, but Ly hit a post having been played through by Alex Healy-Byrne.
The Hatters made an attacking change in bringing on Sam Anderson at the break and the substitute worked Waller with a firm drive from the edge of the area soon after.
However, Westley killed the game off with his second and Burnley’s third goal of the night before the hour, heading in a Ly cross.
Farrell made two changes of his own straight after that goal, with Jesse Williams replacing Benn Ward at centre-back and Bauress taking McDermott’s place in midfield.
Hamzat Balogun and João Mendes were also given the chance to impress from the bench, with Burnley firmly in control of the game as it entered its closing stages.
Westley came agonisingly close to grabbing a hat-trick when he latched onto a slack back pass from Benadict Benagr, but unforutnatley for him his effort smacked a post and bounced clear.
The striker was able to set up a fourth in stoppage-time, though, teeing up Bauress for a close-range finish.
Claude Kayibanda headed a consolation goal for the hosts soon after, but that didn’t put a dampener on a productive evening in Bedfordshire.
Farrell’s side are next in action away at Peterborough United on Wednesday 9th October, before welcoming Brighton & Hove Albion to Turf Moor three days later.
