Young Clarets return to winning ways in Yorkshire

Kamarni Ryan scored twice to help Burnley U21s to a 4-1 victory away at Hull City on Tuesday afternoon.

An own goal and a late Brandon Ly strike put the gloss on an important Professional Development League victory, with the 3rd-placed Clarets beating the 2nd-placed Tigers.

There were three changes to the side that started against Fleetwood Town at Turf Moor last week, with Jon Ander Vilar Robinson keeping goal after Lewis Forshaw joined Lancaster City on loan.

Second-year scholar Oli Pimlott took the place of Logan Pye at left-back, while Vernon Masara featured for the U21s for the first time in nearly five months on the left wing.

Vilar Robinson was the first ‘keeper to be called into action and after he palmed Pharrell Brown’s shot away from goal, Ryan worked Harvey Cartwright at the other end.

Both teams looked to push forward at every opportunity and Tommy McDermott came close to breaking the deadlock but was denied one-on-one by a strong right hand.

Two goals in seven minutes gave the young Clarets a controlling lead at half-time, and the first came when Adon Shehu diverted Charlie Veevers’ whipped cross into his own net.

Ryan then capitalised on a slack pass to seize possession and finish coolly from close range as the match entered first half stoppage-time.

A planned change at the break saw Masara make way for Zach Johnson and McDermott thought he’d given his team the perfect start to the second period, but the assistant flagged for offside.

Hull went straight up the other end and halved their deficit in the 49th minute, with Brown cutting in from the left and finding the top right corner despite Vilar Robinson’s best efforts.

Andy Farrell’s side showed great resilience to hit back straight away though, with Ryan producing a more cultured finish into the bottom right corner after great work from McDermott to set him free.

Two more substitutions on the hour saw Alex Healy-Byrne and Logan Pye replace Hamzat Balogun and Pimlott respectively.

Ryan then perhaps should have had his hat-trick but pulled his shot wide of the left-hand post, before Murray Campbell produced a fine block to keep the score at 3-1.

McDermott made way for Ly and Basilio Socoliche took the place of Ryan as the match entered the final 15 minutes or so.

There was time for Ly to make a goalscoring impact when the ball broke to him after a poor touch from a Hull defender, and the midfielder calmly picked out the bottom left corner first time.

Burnley now have 41 points from 23 matches and are four points adrift of Hull. Importantly though, the Yorkshire-based club have played three matches more.

Next up is a trip to take on Birmingham City at their Knighthead Performance Centre on Friday 28th March, with kick-off at 1pm.
