Ellis Clark’s 98th-minute strike completed an impressive turn around for Burnley U21s against their Everton counterparts on Monday afternoon.

Andy Farell’s side recovered from 2-0 down at Finch Farm, with Kian McMahon-Brown also netting his sixth goal in three games from the penalty spot.

There were two changes to the side that started the Premier League Cup victory over Brentford last time out, with Charlie Casper returning in goal.

Second-year scholar Corey King slotted into the defence at right-back, with McMahon-Brown leading the line.

It was a quiet start to proceedings, with both teams working openings but lacking a quality final touch.

The match kicked into life from the half hour mark onwards, though, with Everton’s Braiden Graham flashing narrowly wide shortly before a flashpoint at the other end.

Francis Gomez was perhaps lucky not to receive a second yellow card and was substituted straight afterwards, with Malik Olayhiwola taking his place in midfield.

McMahon-Brown then had two opportunities to open the scoring before the break, the first of which saw Toffees ‘keeper Douglass Lukjanciks get down well to his left.

Excellent reading of the play then saw Brandon Pouani win the ball high. He found Clark, who’s through ball was perfect for McMahon-Brown, but the striker was denied by Lukjanciks once more.

It was 1-0 to the hosts less than 10 minutes after the restart, with Graham producing a well-placed curler into the top right corner.

The Northern Ireland youth international looked threating throughout, but it was Kingsford Boakye who doubled Everton’s lead with a powerful strike from inside the area.

Burnley responded well, though, and after Oli Pimlott was bought down in the area, McMahon-Brown netted confidently from the penalty spot to make it 2-1.

Farrell’s first changes saw Luca Scanlon and Cameron Scott replace King and Vernon Masara respectively, and Pouani made way for Marley Leuluai soon afterwards.

U18s Destiny Okonkwo and Michael Stanley were then introduced in place of Johnson and Egan-Riley and after an injury to the referee, the fourth official signalled for nine minutes of added time.

McMahon-Brown fired two presentable chances wide, but the young Clarets got the point they deserved with virtually the last kick of the day.

A smart pass from Murray Campbell found Pimlott in the left channel. He crossed for Okonkwo, and the ball fell kindly for Clark to sweep home.

Burnley now have eight points from their 14 Premier League 2 outings to date and are next in action on Monday 23rd February, when Derby County visit the County Ground in Leyland.
